SSPC Publishes New Math Book for the Coatings Industry

SSPC has published a new book titled Practical Math for the Protective Coatings Industry by Raymond E. F. Weaver. As its title denotes, this new 231-page softcover presents a practical review of basic mathematical principles, as well as formulas and calculations commonly used in the protective coatings field.

The first part of the book presents a review of basic mathematics, and provides easy-to-follow rules, tips, and formulas for simple arithmetic, solving equations, dimensional analysis, geometry, computations, and statistics. The second part applies these basic principles and practices to the slightly more complex formulas and calculations used in protective coatings work. It provides formulas and examples for determining dew point and relative humidity, spreading rate, dry film thickness, pigment volume concentration, transfer efficiency, and other important figures. The book also gives advice on assessing measurements and computations, and discusses cost issues such as the time value of money and comparing the cost of coating systems. The book's appendices include an 18 page glossary, rules and formulas, metric and US customary conversion factors, Celsius/Fahrenheit temperature conversion tables, theoretical spreading rates, and dew point and relative humidity charts.
