SSPC Publishes New Compilation on Planning and Specifying Coating Projects

Pittsburgh--SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings has published a new compilation titled Planning and Specifying Industrial Protective Coating Projects. This new 246-page softcover combines excerpts from SSPC's Good Painting Practice, The Inspection of Coatings and Linings, and other publications together with a collection of related SSPC standards, guides and specifications. It is meant to provide a convenient source of information and guidance to owners, specifiers, contractors, and others responsible for planning, managing, and conducting industrial protective coating operations.

The new Planning and Specifying Industrial Protective Coating Projects is not intended to be a do-it-yourself guide to coating projects, nor does it provide detailed information on coating projects for a specific type of facility or structure. Instead, its aim is to offer a general overview of topics, procedures, and conditions that are typically addressed during the development and execution of an industrial protective coating plan. Individual chapters discuss the design of total protective coatings programs, comparative painting costs, the use of plant surveys to maintain coating protection, maintenance coating programs, the preparation and review of coating project specifications, quality control for protective coating projects, inspection plans, and more.

The new Planning and Specifying Industrial Protective Coating Projects also contains a select group of SSPC standards, guides, and specifications referenced by the other chapters. They include the SSPC standards for shop, field, and maintenance painting (PA 1), and measurement of dry coating thickness (PA 2); the SSPC guide to maintenance painting programs (PA 5); the SSPC standard procedures for evaluating field painting contractors (QP 1), shop painting contractors (QP 3), and coating and lining inspection companies (QP 5); the joint SSPC/NACE technical report on the preparation of coating specifications (TR 4/NACE 80200); and the SSPC technology updates on overcoating (TU 3) and estimating costs for coatings projects (TU 9).

The book's appendices include the chapter "Economics of Corrosion Control" from Corrosion and Coatings: An Introduction to Corrosion for Coatings Personnel; Dr. Richard W. Drisko's frequently cited paper "Total Protective Coatings Program" from Technologies for a Diverse Industry: The Proceedings of the SSPC '96 Seminars; a bibliography of books, papers, articles, standards, and other documents; plus a list and brief description of every other SSPC standard, guide, specification, technical report, and technology update mentioned throughout the compilation.

Since it was established in 1950, SSPC has issued well over 100 different reference books, research reports, conference proceedings, technical manuals, and other publications, in addition to over 150 standards, guides, specifications and other consensus documents. Many are mentioned in the bibliography found in the new Planning and Specifying Industrial Protective Coating Projects.

In a sense, all of these publications and standards were designed to assist those who plan, specify, and manage coating projects. However, an attempt to distill this encyclopedia of information into one useable book, while certainly worthwhile, would probably be unfeasible. Instead, SSPC decided on a more practical approach by taking related chapters from several of its best selling titles, combining them with the applicable SSPC standards, and putting them all together in a single, convenient resource publication. Putting the excerpts side by side with the standards they reference not only helps to clarify the text, it also helps place the standards in a practical context. Other compilations of this type include the new Guides on Environmental Protection and the recent Surface Preparation and Coating of Concrete.
