SSPC and WEH Corporation Conduct Phase Two Survey
of U.S. Coatings Market
SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings, in collaboration
with WEH Corporation, has completed a nationwide survey of
coating manufacturers and end-users in an effort to identify
trends and potential growth areas within the domestic protective
coatings market. The results of this effort have been published
as A
Survey of the United States Industrial Maintenance Coatings
Market: Phase Two.
Phase One of this planned three-phase effort was conducted
in 1999 with a survey of coating manufacturers and industrial
painting contractors. In this initial survey, manufacturers
and contractors were asked to provide estimated sales, revenues,
and 3-5 year growth predictions for specific end uses, new
construction vs maintenance, selected applications, geographic
area, substrate type, surface preparation method, and other
criteria. The results of this survey were published in October
1999 as A
Survey of the United States Industrial Maintenance Coatings
Market.
As a follow-up to this initial report, SSPC began Phase Two
in early 2001. Once again, coating manufacturers were asked
to provide sales figures based on similar criteria for the
calendar year 2000. However, this most recent effort concentrates
on the end-users of coatings (i.e., facility owners), rather
than on painting contractors. This new 40-page market study
provides useful insight on the U.S. coatings market, and contains
a wide variety of information of value to sales, marketing,
management, and other personnel involved in maintenance planning
and business development.
Phase Two of the survey provides information on coating manufacturers'
sales by industry end-use, new construction vs maintenance,
U.S. geographic area, substrate, surface preparation method,
product form, resin type, and other sources. The Phase Two
survey alsoprovides information on manufacturers' average sales
volumes, 5-year sales growth, 3-5 year growth expectations,
and other figures for the calendar year 2000.
The Phase Two survey also reports on facility owners' coatings
consumption by new construction vs maintenance, U.S. geographic
area, substrate, and supply source, as well as facility owners'
average 5- and 1-year coating consumption increases. Phase
Two also examines owners' criteria for selecting and maintaining
business relationships with coating suppliers and painting
contractors; the number of suppliers and contractors typically
kept on bid rosters; the use of in-house crews vs outside painting
contractors; and owners' reliance on SSPC's Painting
Contractor Certification Program (PCCP).
The results of the initial survey were extremely well received
by some of the nation's top painting contractors, engineering
firms, coating manufacturers, raw material producers, and equipment
suppliers. SSPC anticipates an equally strong response to Phase
Two of the survey. A
Survey of the United States Industrial Maintenance Coatings
