Subject/Title: SSPC-CS 23.00/AWS C2.23/NACE No. 12, Specification for the Application of Thermal Spray Coatings (Metallizing) of Aluminum, Zinc, andTheir Alloys and Composites for the Corrosion Protection of Steel”

Committee Name: SSPC C.1.14, Thermal Spray Coatings; AWS C.2 Committee on Thermal Spraying; NACE TG 146, Coatings, Thermal Spray

Committee Chair Name and Company:  SSPC C.1.14 chaired by William M. Medford, InSpec; AWS C.2 chaired by Karen Sender, Oerlikon Metco; NACE TG 146 chaired by Rob Davis, Bechtel Corporation

Description of Contents/ Technical Revisions:

The 2016 revision required a reorganization of the standard.  Commentary and optional requirements that appeared mixed in with requirements in the 2003 version of the standard have been moved out of the main body of the standard into non-mandatory appendices. Information in the 2003 version specific to procurement or contract requirements, including appendices containing a complete sample project specification, a model job control method, and a model application process method, has been removed. Optional procedures for verifying proper adhesion and thermal spray coating thickness have been added as non-mandatory appendices. Some requirements have been modified to reflect standards revised or issued after 2003.

Stakeholders Value Statement (how the standard can be used):

The standard is intended for use by facility owners and specifiers who develop project specifications for the application of thermally sprayed coatings on steel structures and components; the inspectors who assess the surface preparation and coating application; and thermal spray application contractors who develop project work plans.

The standard provides minimum requirements for:

  1. Surface preparation prior to application of the thermal spray coating,
  2. Application of the thermal spray coating, and
  3. When specified, application of a sealer or of a sealer and topcoat.

It also includes non-mandatory appendices describing several procedures that can be used to verify proper coating thickness and adhesion in the field.

SSPC Members can download the standard for free in the SSPC MarketPlace or access it via the SSPC Mobile App. Non-members can purchase the standard via the MarketPlace.
