Lead Screening Bill Signed into Law in Kentucky
On April 18, Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher signed House Bill 117, sponsored by Representative Reginald Meeks (D-Louisville), which incorporates an important segment of the NPCA Model Lead Poisoning Prevention Bill: lead screening. Enactment is the culmination of over two years' efforts by NPCA's Kentucky Paint Council and Representative Meeks.
The new law will require that a much larger portion of the at-risk population will now be screened for childhood lead poisoning. Kentucky currently screens only 6 percent of the at-risk population which is one of the lowest percentages in the nation. The new law also places new emphasis on state actions requiring remediation of lead hazards by property owners. The new law is a significant step forward and an affirmation of NPCA's decision to rely, where necessary, on a step by step approach as it works to eliminate childhood lead poisoning.
