Former Philadelphia Navy Base Now a Multi-use Center
A partnership among educational and economic development groups has led to the creation of the Keystone Innovation Center, a multi-use research and manufacturing facility on the site of the former Navy shipyard that closed in South Philadelphia nearly a decade ago. Among those joining the engineers of the Naval Surface Warfare Center in the center are Ben Franklin Technology Partners, Penn State University, and The Delaware Valley Industrial Resource Center. Two ship building and repair operations also occupy the area.
The 1500 engineers and technical staff employed by the Navy's Ship Systems Engineering Station conduct research in the areas of increasing fuel efficiency, reducing pollution, developing fuel cells, and designing advanced propulsion systems. Other research partners locating to the new Innovation Center will be involved in work for the transportation, power, and energy fields around the nation.
