NIOSH Report Summarizes Investigations of Workers at Risk of Exposure to Harmful Levels of Lead

The publication, "Health Hazard Evaluations: Issues Related to Occupational Exposure to Lead, 1994-1999" (NIOSH pub. 2001-13), provides an overview of the findings and recommendations from the individual case reports, as well as key studies, textbooks, and standards for preventing job-related lead exposures.

It includes an investigation on abrasive blasting that studied workers' potential to carry home lead-containing dust produced during removal of lead-based paint from a bridge renovation.

You can obtain a copy of "Health Hazard Evaluations: Issues Related to Occupational Exposure to Lead, 1994-1999" on the NIOSH Website, or from the NIOSH toll-free information number, 1-800-35-NIOSH (1-800-356-4674).

"Lead Exposure from Mechanical Work and Other Non-Blasting Activities" by John V. Bruce from The Proceedings of the Seminars from SSPC '97, Expanding Coating Knowledge Worldwide, November 16-20, 1997, pp. 97-103.

This paper analyzes exposure monitoring and wipe-sampling data collected over 5 years on more than twenty bridge rehabilitation projects. All work activities were monitored and projects included painting, rehabilitation, and superstructure replacement.
