More Information About SSPC Technical Committees
Joining an SSPC Committee
Current SSPC members who wish to join an SSPC Unit Committee
must complete and submit an application. In order to maintain
a balance of interest between suppliers and users on our committees,
only one member from each company is eligible to vote on committee
business, and fewer than 50% of the committee members may represent
supplier interests. SSPC staff will verify that these conditions
are met before adding you to the roster of the committee as
a voting or non-voting member. Note that non-voting members
are welcome to participate in committee meetings and provide
their comments on drafts to the voting member from their company.
Unit and Group Committees
SSPC Committees are divided into six large Group Committees,
as follows:
- C.1 Coating Materials
- C.2 Surface Preparation
- C.3 Application, Inspection, and
Quality Control
- C.4 Methods for Improved Performance
- C.5 Environmental,
Health, and Safety Compliance
- C.7 Protection of Concrete
and Cementitious Substrates
Each Group Committee contains one or more Unit Committees.
If you join a Unit Committee, you will automatically become
a
member
of
the
Group
Committee to which it belongs. Since SSPC standards must
be balloted through both the developing Unit and its corresponding
Group Committee, you may receive ballots on subjects which
appear to be outside the scope of the unit committee you
joined.
This is done in order to provide as many concerned individuals
as possible the opportunity to review and comment on draft
standards, and we encourage you to provide as much input
as possible.
Task Groups
Unit Committees frequently assign smaller ad-hoc task groups
to work on specific tasks such as drafting or revising sections
of documents, or even producing entire drafts of new standards.
Task Groups are usually made up of volunteers from within the
committee, although non-members with expertise in a particular
subject area may occasionally be recruited to participate on
a temporary basis. When an assignment is completed, the task
group dissolves. Joint Standards
Development Activities
SSPC is currently cooperating with several other organizations
in developing joint standards approved by all of the cooperating
organizations in order to avoid duplication of effort. These
organizations include the American Welding Society (AWS),
the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) and NACE
International (NACE).
Proposals for New Standards Any SSPC member may submit a proposal to develop a new standard.
Proposals must be approved by the chair of the group committee
under which the standard will be developed, before being submitted
to the SSPC Standards Review Committee for approval to proceed
with consensus development. Justification for development,
scope, and a detailed outline of the standard must be submitted
with the proposal. The Standards Review Committee (SRC) has
30 days to evaluate and respond to each proposal.
Voting Member Responsibilities Because SSPC committees usually only meet once a year, much
of their work is accomplished by correspondence. Therefore,
committee voting members are required to respond to committee
ballots before the established due date. Failure to return
three consecutive Unit committee ballots may result in deletion
from that committee roster. If a voter has not had the opportunity
to review a draft, the ballot should be returned as an abstention,
which will not affect the member's voting record.
Benefits of Committee Membership
Those who volunteer to participate in SSPC technical committees
will benefit from the opportunity to network with other experts
in a particular technology area as well as the chance to directly
contribute to the development of industry standards. SSPC Unit
and Group Committee chairs receive complimentary copies of
completed standards developed by their committees and formal
acknowledgement of their contributions during the SSPC National
Conference as well as in SSPC Online. Furthermore timely review
and balloting of a SSPC technical committee document earns
2 continuing education units toward SSPC Protective Coatings
Specialist (PCS) certification.
