SSPC Standards Actions

Last update: May 29, 2009

Listed below are proposals for the development of new standards, the withdrawal of existing standards, the formation of new committees, and the reactivation of dormant committees received after January 1, 2009.

When the first draft of a new standard has been sent out for ballot, the standard will be listed on the Current Status page under the originating (developing) SSPC Unit Committee.

Anyone interested in participating in the work of these or any other SSPC Technical Committees is invited to contact Aimée Beggs, SSPC Standards Development Specialist and Technical Committee Liaison, at 1.412.281.2331 x2223 or beggs@sspc.org.

Proposals for New Standards Submitted to SSPC Standards Review Committee 2009

  • Procedure for Determining Contamination Levels on Steel Substrates Using the Conductivity Method

  • Standard for Three-Coat Moisture-Cure Polyurethane Coating System, Performance-Based

  • Standard for Direct-To-Metal Aliphatic Polyurea Coating, Performance-Based

Review Committees for the above standards will be formed when the projects are approved by the Standards Review Committee.

New Standards Development Projects Initiated 2009

Subject: Method for Evaluating Scribe Undercutting of Exposed Steel Test Panels

Rationale for Development: No standard procedure exists for determining locations and number of data points to be used for determining scribe undercutting on a steel test surface, an important test for evaluation of coating performance

Scope: The standard describes procedures for evaluating rust undercutting on scribed coated steel test coupons as well as data collection, analysis, and reporting requirements.

Stakeholders: Coating manufacturers, testing laboratories, facility owners who perform in-house performance testing of industrial protective coatings

Developing Committee: SSPC C.4.2 Performance Evaluation of Coatings

Subject: Method for Preparing Steel Test Panels for Application of Coatings

Rationale for Development: This method will standardize material requirements for the steel test panels as well as the procedure for preparing them prior to application of coating for performance testing. The objective is to minimize variations in coating performance that may be affected by the type of steel used for the test panel and variations in the procedures for preparation of the test panels.

Scope: This method will describe the requirements for preparing coated steel panels for exposure and other tests, including panel material, size, geometry, surface preparation, coating application, and scribing.

Stakeholders: Coating manufacturers, testing laboratories, facility owners who perform in-house performance testing of industrial protective coatings

Developing Committee: SSPC C.4.2 Performance Evaluation of Coatings

Subject: Standard for Three-Coat Moisture-Cure Polyurethane Coating System, Performance-Based

Rationale for Development: The coating system utilizes three single package moisture-cure urethane coatings. The three coatings are being used as a system in the field, especially in high-humidity environments, and can be used in cool-weather applications, but no system standard yet exists.

Scope: The standard will present performance requirements for a 3-coat system based on SSPC Paints 40, 41, and 38.

Stakeholders: Owners and specifiers requiring coatings that may be rapidly recoated for use in high humidity environments, coating manufacturers who provide these systems.

Developing Committee:

Subject: Standard for Direct-To-Metal Aliphatic Polyurea Coating, Performance-Based

Rationale for Development: This DTM coating specification will define performance requirements of a coating used for light and medium end-use industrial and marine applications that require. rapid throughput of shop coated work. Coating suppliers and end-users report a growing market for replacing two-coat systems with a single-coat DTM application in fabricator shops.

Scope: The coating is a self-priming aliphatic polyurea composition intended as a single-coat direct-to-metal application primarily for use in fabricator shops with touch-up capabilities in the field. The coating shall be applied to a steel substrate blasted in accordance with SSPC-SP 10, Near White Blast Cleaning. The resins used in the coating are comprised of a hindered polyamine and a polyisocyanate that react to form an aliphatic polyurea. Composition requirements are similar to those described in SSPC-Paint 39 (Type 2) with allowance for addition of corrosion inhibitors for improved single coat system durability. This coating is designed to be applied at thicknesses of 6 to 9 mils. VOC shall be no more than 340 g/l.

Stakeholders: Fabricator shop applications, highways and bridges.

Developing Committee:

Subject: Method for Determining Compliance with Surface Profile Requirements

Rationale for Development: Methods exist for taking profile readings, but not for determining compliance with a specified profile range.

Scope: This standard describes a procedure suitable for shop or field use for determining compliance with specified profile ranges on a steel substrate using methods A (visual comparator), B (depth micrometer) and C (replica tape) in ASTM D 4417, and surface roughness and peak count using a portable stylus instrument as described in ASTM D 7127.

Stakeholders: Specifiers, Inspectors, Contractors.
