SSPC Standards Actions

Listed below are proposals for the development of new standards, the withdrawal of existing standards, the formation of new committees, and the reactivation of dormant committees received after January 1, 2008.

When the first draft of a new standard has been sent out for ballot, the standard will be listed on the Current Status page under the originating (developing) SSPC Unit Committee.

Proposals for New Standards Submitted to SSPC Standards Review Committee 2008

Subject: Standard for Application of Polyurea and/or Polyurethane Thick-Film Coatings

Rationale for Development: Specifiers and  facility owners using these coatings have discovered wide variation in training and consistency of application procedures

Scope: Standard will focus on proper surface preparation for and procedures for application of thick film polyurea, polyurea hybrid, and polyurethane coatings over steel and concrete substrates

Stakeholders: Owners and specifiers of thick film polyurea and/or polyurethane coatings as well as contractors who are entering this specialty application area

Developing  Committee: C.1.9, Polyurea Coatings, with input from C.3.1 Application Methods Committee

New Standards Development Projects Initiated 2008

Title of Standard Guide to Selection and Application of Coatings Over Galvanized Steel.
Developing Committee Being formed; interested participants should contact Aim?e Beggs at SSPC.
Topic/Scope of Standard The scope of this guide will include the surface preparation method and recommended surface profile ranges needed to achieve proper coating adhesion, different types of coatings, applicable re-coat windows, application methods and recommend dry film thicknesses of painted continuous zinc-coated (galvanized) steel surfaces.
Title of Standard Measurement of Surface Profile on Steel Substrates with Replica Tape and Spring Micrometers and Digital Surface Profile Gages
Developing Committee C.3.2 Film Thickness Measurement, with members of C.2 Surface Preparation Group Committee. Interested participants should contact Aim?e Beggs at SSPC.
Topic/Scope of Standard The standard defines a procedure to determine if the surface profile over an extended area conforms to the minimum and the maximum levels specified.

Title of Standard: Performance-Based Standard for Recycled Sponge-Encapsulated Abrasive Media

Developing Committee: C.2.1, Abrasives

Topic/Scope of Standard: Requirements for evaluating initial quality and field performance of recycled sponge encapsulated abrasive media

Stakeholders: Sponge encapsulated abrasive manufacturers, industrial painting contractors, facility owners who require use of sponge encapsulated abrasive on painting projects

Current Status: Task Group preparing draft for first formal ballot


Title of Standard:Two-Coat Zinc-Rich Polyurethane Primer/Aliphatic Polyurea Topcoat System, Performance-Based

Developing Committee: C.1.3.D Polyurethane Coatings

Topic/Scope of Standard:Performance-based polyurethane coating system comprised of a polyurethane zinc-rich primer and a two-component aliphatic (moderate-dry) polyurea topcoat

Stakeholders: Manufacturers of polyurethane coatings, raw materials used in polyurethane coatings, coating specifiers, painting contractors, facility owners
