BCI Certification Term and Renewal
Level 1
Maintaining Level 1 Status
Level I status may be maintained for an indefinite period of time if the inspector provides the documentation listed and maintains appropriate work standards as evidenced through independent audits and owner endorsements. Inspectors are required to complete and submit to SSPC, a Renewal Packet every four years from their certification date. Renewal packets containing a Renewal Letter and Attestation Form are sent to the last known address 6 months prior to the re-certification date.
Inspectors are responsible for complete documentation of work experience. Within two weeks of accepting a position as a bridge coatings inspector, please notify the SSPC Program Administrator and fill out the Job Notification Form. At the completion of each project, the inspector is to request the owner representative to send a completed Inspector Performance Evaluation Form to the program administrator. The inspector shall have no detrimental disciplinary actions and must pass all independent audits. The inspector is responsible for updating the program administrator with current personal contact information.
Level 1 status will not be renewed if the inspector fails to comply with any requirement of the program or does not supply SSPC with documentation of work over the four-year period.
Certification Level
Maintaining Certification
- Job Notification Form
- Obtain owner representative endorsement
- Complete an open book refresher exam - 80% or higher
- No detrimental disciplinary actions
- Pass independent audits (See attached Audit Criteria)
- Update program administrator of change in address
Certified status may be maintained for a period of four years if the Certified inspector provides the documentation listed and maintains appropriate work standards as evidenced through independent audits and owner endorsements.
Certified Inspectors are responsible for complete documentation of work experience. Within two weeks of accepting a position as a bridge coatings inspector, please notify the SSPC Program Administrator and fill out the Job Notification Form. At the completion of each project, the inspector is to request the owner representative to send a completed Inspector Performance Evaluation Form to the program administrator. Certified inspectors must document a minimum of 2000 hours of bridge coatings inspection experience as it occurs during each four year period. This documentation may be listed on the work experience form. Failure to document experience and obtain bridge owner representative endorsement will result in that experience not counting towards maintenance of Certified status. The inspector is responsible for updating the program administrator with current personal contact information
Certified inspectors may extend their Certified status by completing the Re-certification Process every four years from their certification date. The Re-certification Process consists of completion of a Re-certification Letter, Attestation Form, and an open book examination. Certified inspectors must obtain a minimum of 80% to successfully complete the open book examination. Re-certification Process packets are sent to the last known address 6 months prior to the re-certification date.
Disciplinary Action Program
If any Disciplinary Action (except Revocation) is taken against a Certified Inspector, the Inspector drops back in the program to Level 1. (How does the inspector regain certified status?) Any Disciplinary Action involving Revocation will result in returning to the initial application step (taking the training and exam) following the Revocation period. If disciplinary action is a result of an ethical violation the person must follow the below criteria. Any ethical violation at either level requires that the person attend an eight (8) hour ethics class taught by an accredited institution that is approved by the CETG. Attendance must be documented. This requirement is in addition to any disciplinary action imposed.
