BCI Prerequisites for Certification Level

*There are no prerequisites to attend the BCI Level 1 Course

Prior to going through the Certification Part of the Program, all individuals registering for the Coatings Inspection Training and Certification for the Bridge Industry (BCI) must provide information showing that they meet the minimum requirements as set forth in this form. If SSPC is unable to verify the accuracy of any information reported on this form, it may result in rejection of your application.

Three Processes, A, B, and C to achieve Prerequisites

(Process A)
Achieving Certification After Passing the BCI Course Exam

Candidate submits an Application to the SSPC Program Administrator (PA) along with the Attestation on the program rules, Work Experience Form, Professional Reference Form and the contents of the Disciplinary Action Program.

In order to qualify for the Certification Exam, the candidate must successfully complete the BCI course, pass the Course Exam with a score of 80% or higher, and document a minimum of 3000 hours bridge coating inspection work on the SSPC Work Experience Form.

You must also provide Three Professional References from the bridge coatings industry. One of those references must be an owner of a bridge. A professional reference must be a supervisor who can attest to the work performed, the hours submitted and the ethics of the applicant.

Pass the Certification Exam with a score of 80% or higher.

(Process B)
Achieving Certification With Alternate Training

Candidate submits an Application to the SSPC Program Administrator (PA) along with the Attestation on the program rules, Work Experience Form, Professional Reference Form and the contents of the Disciplinary Action Program.

Candidates may present alternate course training in lieu of the BCI course. The BCI Executive Committee and SSPC will accept the alternate course based on industry-wide knowledge of the course and also the training provider. Courses will not be accepted that fail to meet both elements of that criteria. To be a valid course it must have an exam, which consists of a closed book written portion and a practical instrument portion, at the end. Candidates must show proof that they passed the alternate course exam with a score of 70% or above. Proof must be documented by sending SSPC a copy of your certificate.

If the candidate's alternate course meets the above requirements then the student can bypass the lecture portion of the course and will only be required to take the course exams. Candidates will get one attempt to take the exams and there will be no re-test.

If the candidate does not pass the BCI course exam with an 80%, they are required to then take the full BCI training.

If the candidate passes the BCI Course Exam with a score of 80% or higher and document on the Work Experience Form that he/she has at least 3000 hours of bridge coatings inspection work, the candidate is eligible to take the Certification Exam.

You must also provide Three Professional References from the bridge coatings industry. One of those references must be an owner of a bridge. A professional reference must be a supervisor who can attest to the work performed, the hours submitted and the ethics of the applicant.

Pass the Certification Exam with a score of 80% or higher.

Inspectors must document at least 5,000 hours of bridge coating inspection work on the Work Experience Form to take the BCI course exam without formal training.

Pass the BCI Course Exam with a score of 80% or higher.

The candidate is eligible to take the Certification Exam if they can document at least 7500 hours of bridge coating inspection work and they have passed the BCI Course Exam. (Additional 2,500 hours above those required above.)

Provide Five Professional References from the bridge coatings industry. One of those references must be an owner of a bridge. A professional reference must be a supervisor who can attest to the work performed, the hours submitted and the ethics of the applicant.

Pass the Certification Exam with a score of 80% or higher.
