SSPC PCI Basic Inspector Term and Renewal
PCI Basic Inspector
An SSPC PCI Basic Inspector must possess a basic knowledge of protective coating industry standards and the use of inspection equipment and be capable of:
• Implementing and recording all inspections as required
• Verifying instrument calibration
• Performing hold point inspections
PCI Basic Inspector Renewal Term:
The PCI Basic Inspector level renewal term is four years from the initial exam date.
The renewal term is also four years
Renewing PCI Basic Inspector Certification
PCI Basic Inspectors are required to complete and submit to SSPC a Renewal Packet every four years. Renewal packets containing a Renewal Letter, Attestation, Work Experience Form and DAC acknowledgement forms are sent to the last known address 6 months prior to the re-newal date.
To renew at the PCI Basic Inspector level the candidate must:
• Within four years, take the PCI recertification exam.
• Document a minimum of 750 hours of coatings inspection (or related) experience as it occurs during the four-year certification period.
• No detrimental disciplinary actions.

PCI Certified Inspector
An SSPC-Certified Protective Coatings Inspector shall be capable of performing all the duties and responsibilities of a PCI Basic Inspector. In addition, the Certified PCI shall be capable of:
• Supervising PCI Basic Inspectors.
• Planning and supervising inspections, initiating and reviewing inspection procedures, and evaluating the adequacy of activities.
• Implementing and monitoring the Quality Control Program.
Certification Term:
The SSPC-Certified Protective Coatings Inspector level certification term is four years from the initial certification exam date. The renewal term is also four years.
Renewing SSPC-Certified Protective Coatings Inspector Status
SSPC-Certified Protective Coatings Inspectors are required to complete and submit to SSPC a Renewal Packet every four years. The Re-certification process consists of completion of a Re-certification Letter, Attestation Form, and completion of an open-book exam. Certified inspectors must obtain a minimum of 80% to successfully complete the PCI refresher course. Re-certification process packets are sent to the last known address 6 months prior to the re-certification date.
To renew certification for the SSPC Certified Protective Coatings Inspector the candidate must:
• Within four years, take the PCI recertification exam.
• Document a minimum of 2000 hours of coatings inspection (or related) experience as it occurs during their four years certification term.
• No detrimental disciplinary actions.
• Update program administrator of changes in address by sending information to:

Disciplinary Action Criteria
If any Disciplinary Action (except Revocation) is taken against a Certified Inspector, the Inspector drops back in the program to the PCI Basic Inspector level. Any Disciplinary Action involving Revocation will result in returning to the initial application step (taking the training and exam) following the Revocation period. Any ethical violation at either level requires that the person attend an eight (8) hour ethics class taught by an accredited institution that is approved by SSPC. Attendance must be documented. This requirement is in addition to any disciplinary action imposed. |
