Other SSPC or SSPC Administered Courses |
-Any
successfully completed training course dealing primarily with industrial or
marine protective coatings technology or steel corrosion offered by an
IACET-certified training organization or an accredited college or university
or trade school.
-In addition, the student must
have passed a written exam and the course must have been taught by a
qualified instructor as determined by the SSPC Individual Certification
Program Administrator. A qualified instructor is defined as a person who has
similar qualifications to those qualified to instruct SSPC training courses. |
(Process A)
Achieving Certification After
Completing the PCI Course and Passing the PCI Basic Exam
Candidate submits an Application
to the SSPC Individual Certification Program Administrator (PA) along with the
Work Experience Form, and Training History Form, and acknowledges in the
application that he/she has read and understands the contents of the
Disciplinary Action Program (DAC) set forth as well as other program rules.
In order to qualify for the
Certification Exam under Process “A,” the candidate must successfully complete
the PCI course, pass the Course Exam with a score of 70% or higher on each
component, and document a minimum of 3000 hours of coating inspection experience on the SSPC Work Experience Form. See Note 2 above for examples of accepted work experience.
In addition to passing the PCI
course, the candidate must also possess 40 hours of SSPC or approved formal
coatings training as documented on the training history form. See Table 1 above for examples of approved additional training.
To become an SSPC certified
coatings inspector, you must pass each component of the Certification Exam with
a score of 80% or higher.
If you are doing Process A-1, you do not have to submit the training history form.
(Process B)
Achieving Certification With
Alternate Inspection Training
Candidate submits an Application
to the SSPC Individual Certification Program Administrator (PA) along with the
Work Experience Form, and Training History Form, and acknowledges in the
application that he/she has read and understands the contents of the
Disciplinary Action Program (DAC) set forth as well as other program rules.
The candidate seeking PCI
Certification through Process “B” may take the certification exam without
taking the PCI training course so long as the applicant possesses 80 hours of
formal industry training approved by SSPC, of which 40 hours must be formal
inspection training equivalent to the body of knowledge of the SSPC PCI
inspection course, as documented on the training history form. Job-specific
safety, health and environmental compliance training is excluded from the
approved training list. See Table 1 above for examples of acceptable
alternate training.
Candidates for Certification
through Process “B” must pass the PCI Course Exam prior to sitting for the PCI
Certification Exam unless they are eligible for an exemption**.
**Candidates applying for eligibility under Process “B”
who have already achieved NACE III Certification or Frosio Certification can
request an exemption from taking the PCI Course Exam prior to sitting for the
PCI Certification Exam.
In addition to possessing 80 hrs
of formal training, the candidate must document a minimum of 3000 hours coating
inspection work experience on the SSPC Work Experience Form. See
Note 2 above for approved related work
experience.
To become an SSPC certified
coatings inspector through, you must pass each component of the Certification
Exam with a score of 80% or higher.
Process C
Achieving Certification Without
Formal Inspection Training
Those with significant work
experience can choose to bypass the formal inspection training requirements
outlined in Processes “A” and “B” prior to sitting for the Certification Exam.

Administrator (PA) along with the Work Experience Form, and Training History

coating inspection work experience. See Note 2 above for approved related work experience. Even though a
total of 7,500 hours of documented work experience is required to sit for the
PCI certification exam, a candidate seeking PCI Certification under Process “C”
must document at least 5000 hours of experience before sitting for the PCI
Course Exam.
Process “C” candidates must also
pass the PCI Course exam with a score of 70% or higher.
