Applicator Train-the-Trainer Program (ATT)


Course Description

The course is designed to train owners, supervisors and other representatives of industrial painting contracting companies on the delivery of two levels of the SSPC Applicator Training Program for surface preparation and coating application. It will also provide you and your craft workers with a standardized curriculum for applicator training that you can present at your shop or job site at your own convenience.

This course is only available to Contractors and Facility Owners.

Once you take the Applicator-Train-the-Trainer and pass the exam, you will get a CD-ROM to help you prepare in teaching your own workers. The CD -ROM can be used to prepare your workers for the SSPC Coating Application Specialist (CAS) Exam. The CAS exam must be adminstered by a 3rd party entity. By using this CD-ROM you are not certifing your own workers to the CAS Program.


If you leave your current company and go to work for another contractor or facility owner you must contact SSPC before you start using the applicator curriculum at your new company. You must also inform your new company to call SSPC to request that you become the approved applicator trainer.

Prerequisites

To become a trainer you must meet the below criteria:

- A level 2 Inspection Certification. For example: SSPC PCI, BCI Level 1, NBPI, NACE CIP Level 2, iCORR Level 2, and so on.
- 5,000 hours (approximately 5 years) experience blasting/spraying in the field.
- Must currently be active in the field or have 10 plus years of experience.

Course Content

The program covers topics in the areas of surface preparation and coating application for Levels I and II. Level I training is especially designed for entry-level employees new to the coatings industry while Level II meets the training needs of more seasoned craft workers.

Course Format

The two-day train-the-trainer program reviews the applicator curriculum through lectures and team exercises. The trainer course concludes with a short multiple choice exam, covering adult learning, surface preparation and coating application. Trainers completing this “Train-the-Trainer” session are qualified by SSPC to return to their facilities and teach the SSPC curriculum to their workers.

Contractor supervisory personnel interested in learning how to train their craft workers in surface preparation and application techniques.


Exam Content

Part 1: Multiple Choice Exam on Surface Preparation and Application.
Part 2: Students draw numbers randomly (the afternoon of Day 1) to receive their teaching assignments. You are to study the printed PowerPoint in your books the evening of Day 1 to prepare to teach the unit on Day 2. The instructor will then evaluate you on your teaching style.

You must get an 80% or better to pass the course.

The Complete SSPC Train-the-Trainer Package

SSPC has created this Train-the-Trainer Package to provide you with the tools to complete your craft worker training and create documentation of that training. Once you take the Applicator-Train-the-Trainer and pass the exam, you will get a CD-ROM to help you prepare in teaching your own workers. The CD-ROM will be sent to you along with your certificate after the course is over.


The CD-ROM will prepare you to train your workers in a step-by-step fashion through all aspects of surface preparation and application for Level 1 (entry-level) and Level 2 (apprentice or “journeyman” level). The CD also provides you with a complete plan for the hands-on training so that you will know exactly what equipment and supplies are needed to deliver the course at your facility. The CD-ROM will also prepare your employees for the SSPC CAS Program.

Safety Module

Coating operations have many inherently unsafe conditions, materials, and procedures. This module presents an overview of the hazards that are commonly encountered by coating applicators and the equipment, methods, and procedures available to reduce these hazards to an acceptable level. Because of changing standards, no attempt is made in this module to report safe levels of exposure or other information subject to change. This module is general awareness training. It is not intended to be a substitute for training on job-specific hazards and their control.

Per Student Pricing

Once your workers complete the approved curriculum and exams, SSPC will do the following administrative items at a per student fee of $35.00:


  1. Maintain documentation of the training by entering the students into the SSPC database.
  2. Issue SSPC certificates for those who have successfully completed the training.

The training and documentation will enable your company to move forward with certification for your craft workers when applicator certification is required. In any event, this will give you a competitive advantage in demonstrating that your company is committed to an industry-recognized worker-training program created by the leading industrial coatings society, SSPC.

SSPC has added seven new modules to help contractors meet the Full Body of Knowledge as outlined in SSPC ACS-1/NACE 13: The modules can be purchased on a CD individually or you can purchase all 7 together on one CD.
