Severe Wastewater Testing Program for Rapid Evaluation of Coatings and Linings
Summary: This month's Tech Feature is a presentation from PACE 2008 and discusses the high failure rate of high-performance protective coatings in the severe headspace environments of wastewater facilities. These rates can be attributed to many factors, including low permeability properties to resist H2S and other corrosive gasses present within these environments. Although the chemical and physical properties of coating systems can be determined in the lab, this is not the case for application variables and the effects of environmental factors. Due to a dearth of testing practices for wastewater conditions, specifiers are faced with product selection based upon unsubstantiated claims by manufacturers for use in these severe environments. This paper describes a laboratory-testing program that simulates the effects of a severe wastewater headspace environment and produces interpretable data in 28 days.
