Pittsburgh, PA, USA – SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings adds another inspection course to their already robust catalog of acclaimed programs. The new online Insulation Inspector course was developed in conjunction with Corrodere based on the demands of the thermal insulation industry.

Insulation materials are used in abundance globally, specifically in the chemical, petrochemical, offshore and marine industries to preserve heat loss, mitigation of ice formation, reduction in noise levels and to protect workers/site personnel. There are various forms of insulation used including mineral wool/glass, foam glass, rubber, polyisocyanurate, aerogel amongst others. The assets, including ferrous and non-ferrous pipes and vessels, are generally prepared and coated prior to the installation of the insulation materials. The asset life could take up to fifty years which will warrant inspection, maintenance and refurbishment of the coatings and insulation. Corrosion under insulation (CUI) in particular is an increasing problem in older plants and structures which is costing the industry millions of dollars per year.

The course has been designed for coating inspectors, plant/maintenance inspectors and engineers. It covers insulation systems, corrosion and CUI, protective coatings used under insulation, design, standards/specification, QA/QC, safety, duties of the Insulation Inspector, and Insulation materials.

The course covers all aspects of thermal insulation and its use in the industry. In addition, the program covers basic corrosion, design, standards/specifications, quality assurance/quality control, health/safety, insulation inspector’s duties, application of insulation, insulation surveys and documentation.

Flexibility has been built into the program allowing students to take it as either training or certification, depending on the experience of the candidate. To become certified, candidates must hold a recognized coating inspection certificate and have a strong understanding of surface preparation, anti-corrosion coatings and the use of a variety of inspection tools. The certification level includes access to the course and the available in-person exam, based on the candidate possessing a coating/painting certification such as SSPC PCI Level 1, SSPC BCI Level 1, SSPC NBPI, SSPC CCI Level 1, NACE CIP Level 1, ICORR Level 1, or Frosio Level 1. Candidates who don’t hold currently hold one of these credentials can take the online course and online quizzes and receive a certificate of training upon passing.

The course will be offered online in English and Chinese to enable the maximum global impact.
